The Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) will enter into cooperative agreements with state governments for the purpose of purchasing local, unprocessed or minimally processed domestic foods from local producers, targeting historically underserved farmers/producers/fishers and small businesses including processors, aggregators, and distributors. This grant program involves scientists, agricultural producers, and others using interdisciplinary approaches to advance sustainable agriculture at local and regional levels. This program provides twenty $5000 awards to Native Hawaiian students in 2-year and 4-year institutions pursuing a bachelors or graduate degree. The goal of this program is to help Native students with financial need conduct research in an agricultural related area. This 16 week program is a UH Hawaiʻi Community College at Hilo non-credit course where interns are matched with hosts to work side-by-side, complete a two-year business plan together, and have conversations about their goals and visions for agriculture in Hawaiʻi.
